1. Get a domain name and and hosting for for your site.
A domain name is the address of a website. www.avonia.info is an example of a domain. Most web hosts also register (sell) domains. A list of accredited domain name registrars can be found at: http://www.icann.org/registrar-reports/accredited-list.html. Manually setting up a server to host a site requires a lot of work and expertise. It also entails managing security, updates, as well as all the other tedious system administration tasks. Instead, it is much easier to use a hosting service to display your site. There are many hosting providers to choose from depending on your needs.
2. Install A Content Management System on your site.
There are many Content Management Systems to choose from. Several to consider are: WordPress, Contao and Joomla. Some hosting providers allow users to install a CMS with a single click in a control panel. A CMS can also be installed using FTP. While the following example uses wordpress, ftp installations for other content management systems are mostly the same. FTP allows the transfer of files from one computer to another. If you do not have FTP software already on your computer (perhaps under a button with a label similar to “connect to server”) Filezilla can be installed without cost. Go to wordpress.org and download the latest release and unzip the folder. Using FTP copy the unzipped wordpress install folder into your server’s source directory. Before the installation you must set up the sql database your site will use. To do this find the section in the administration section of your webhosts site that is devoted to databases. Once there create a new mysql database and record the username and password for your database; you will need it later. Also be sure to find and record the hostname/address of your database server it will also be needed during he installation. Go to your website using a browser follow the installation instructions, and you’re done. For more information on installing wordpress see their installation guide at: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Detailed_Instructions. http://docs.joomla.org/Beginners#Install_Joomla.21 has information on joomla installation.
3. Configure your site and upload content.
Login to the your cms’s administrator section by going to: www.yourwebsitenamehere.com/wp-admin for worpress; and www.yourwebsitenamehere.com/administrator for joomla. Your cms will prompt you for the username and password you set up earlier during the installation process. The first thing to do is delete any of the unnecessary example content. After that you can write your first post by going to posts then add new. More information on wordpress administration can be found at: http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page. For joomla go to: docs.joomla.org/.
